FAQ's

Your Most Frequently Asked Questions Answered

MY FURNACE IS MAKING AN ODD NOISE, IS IT DANGEROUS?

Most fuel tanks have a gauge that tells how much oil is in the tank. It is important to know that a tank will not hold what its name suggests. Diesel fuel expands when it gets warm and contracts when it is cold. Oil tanks are built to allow for this change in volume; therefore a 275 – gallon tank will not hold more than 250 – 260 gallons of fuel. The larger the tank size, the larger the gap.

MY FURNACE IS MAKING AN ODD NOISE, IS IT DANGEROUS?

A Well working furnace is very important for the smooth running of the heating system of a house. A faulty furnace can lead to possible carbon monoxide poisoning. If having furnace difficulties, call your service technician or Green Petroleum for a list of recommended technicians.

I SMELL OIL, IS MY TANK OR FURNACE LEAKING? WHAT DO I DO?

You are likely to smell oil immediately after refill. However, if you smell oil at any other time and/or see a drip leading to a continuous spill and accumulation, call your service technician or Green Petroleum for a list of recommended technicians.

MY HEAT IS NOT WORKING!

It is important to make sure you have not run out of oil. Check to be sure your tank is not empty. Most tanks have a gauge and are moderately accurate.

Make sure your furnace has power. Next, check the circuit breaker to make sure it has not tripped. If neither of this work, try and reset the furnace. A furnace generally has a restart button that you can push to get things moving. However, push this button only once. Pushing it more than once could cause further damage. The furnace should run for a few minutes; if so, you have solved your problem. If the furnace refuses to come alive, or if it shuts off again right away; call your service technician or Green Petroleum for a list of recommended technicians.
